Sabotaging Democracy

Sabotaging Democracy

Say no to the Espionage and Foreign Interference bill.

We know the Liberals won't, so we need the Labor party to protect our democracy. There are numerous other concerns with this legislation package and it could have a huge impact on charities and people working for good.

Good democracies need advocacy and dissent to function well. Send this bill back to the drawing board.

Call on Labor to stop sabotaging democracy

The Espionage and Foreign interference bill will sabotage our democracy.

It is very complex legislation, and you can read more here, but in essence, peaceful activists could face jail terms of up to twenty years for sabotage and a raft of new charges.

Currently, the proposed changes to the Espionage Act, could see peaceful activists picketing MP's office's, or Parliament or public infrastructure, go to jail for for up to 20 years under these charges. People resisting new coal mine developments in order to protect the climate could be similarly impacted.

There has been pressure and concerns raised on all three proposed bills, introduced purportedly to protect our democracy from government interference, however the least understood piece of legislation, that could have the largest impacts for peaceful protest is the Espionage and Foreign Interference Act.

The proposed legislation is so dangerous it should be binned and they should start again.

We call on the ALP to be brave and stand up for human rights, democracy and an active civil society. We want to change the rules, but not to the extent that human rights are compromised.  If we want true national security we need a vibrant and functioning democracy that is able to advocate and dissent.

Say NO to the proposed legislation on Espionage and Foreign Interference.
