Your Department is failing to protect wildlife from logging
Dear Minister D'Ambrosio, I am writing because I am extremely disappointed that your Environment Department isn't doing its job to regulate logging in Victoria's forests, and consistently fails to take action to stop unlawful logging, and protect threatened species. Logging in a coupe called Rosy Barb on Mt. Jersey in East Gippsland threatens the survival of the rare and endangered Large Brown Tree Frog. The frog was recently split into a new species, halving its range and population and making the species even more rare. Your Environment Department has failed to put in the minimum protection requirements by law to protect the frog, prioritising logging over its protection. A Special Protection Zone has been established for the Large Brown Tree Frog, but it does not meet the requirements of the action statement that the reserve cannot be less than 300m wide at any point. VicForests are logging right up to the boundary of the SPZ, which falls far short of the minimum protection requirements, and just over 200m away from the detection site detection site. Your government committed to putting in place interim protections for all listed species by October this year as part of the newly signed Regional Forest Agreements. Protections for threatened species shouldn't be optional. We need stronger laws, stronger protections, and proper regulation to stop Victoria's extinction crisis. Over a year ago a damning independent review into your Department showed as a regulator they are weak and ineffective. We the Victorian community have seen no changes since then and understand that the government is even trying to weaken the Code of Practice and remove third party rights so community groups can't take legal action against VicForests. Environment laws should be strengthened and properly enforced. Victorians are deeply concerned about the welfare of wildlife post bushfires. We are calling on you as the Environment Minister to step in. Your Department has failed to follow the laws to protect the Large Brown Tree Frog and has consistently refused to hold VicForests accountable for their lawless logging, putting the interests of the loggers ahead of species seriously threatened with extinction. Protecting these forests from logging is the only way to ensure Victoria's precious and unique wildlife survives. I expect you take immediate action to push your Department to take legal action against VicForests.
